about us

Our History at the Heart of Brotton

Welcome to your community pharmacy at 5 High Street. While our name has changed over the decades, our commitment to the health of Brotton has remained constant for over a century. Our story is woven into the very fabric of this village, from the height of the Ironstone boom to the modern healthcare hub we are today.

The Welford Legacy & Chemist’s Corner

Our roots trace back to the historic "Chemist’s Corner" at the junction of High Street and Skelton Road. Originally operated by Richard Welford, a member of one of Brotton’s oldest families dating back to the 1700s, this site was the primary medical point for local miners and their families. To this day, you can still see "The Pharmacy" carved into the stonework of that original building (now Vinegar Jones)—a lasting tribute to the Welford family’s service.

The new owners, experienced pharmacist operators with a wealth of expertise in both NHS and private healthcare services, are committed to expanding and enhancing the offering at Brotton Pharmacy.

The Move to 5 High Street

As the village grew and pharmacy regulations evolved, the pharmaceutical licence transitioned to our current home at 5 High Street
